The library of the Ternopil State Medical University started its functioning in June 1957. The first head of the library P. S. Herasymenko was one of its organizers.

The main task of the library is to provide our students with appropriate textbooks, to help the teaching-staff with their scientific research work, to educate students.

With the development of University the quantity of students and library workers increased. The funds have been completed with the new literature in medicine, social studies, as well as fiction and foreign literature.

Nowadays, the University may be proud of its library. There are 379543 literary copies including: 161716 scientific books, 202331 educational textbooks and manuals, 15496 belles - lettres. Providing the students with the textbooks free of charge is almost 100 per cent. Since 1957 a unique fund of both native and foreign magazines has been collected, which is of great value. Due to founding the new faculties the subject collection of medical literature in the library has been extended. There are three library structural departments: the department for serving the readers, including some reading-halls; the department of collecting and scientific processing of the literature; the reference - bibliographical department.

There are three departments to serve the readers: the department of scientific literature and belles-lettres and the department of educational literature, and the department of literature for foreign students. The special funds contain information and English editions.

There are three reading - halls equipped with modern computer technique. Both raritary and the newest medical literature is collected in the funds of the reading-halls. There is a special fund of electronic books on compact-discs (CD-ROM), which facilitate to improve the students' knowledge. Comfortable furniture makes the atmosphere both cozy and academic.



The reading halls equipped with educational, methodical and scientific books in different subjects, function at the educational scientific institutes giving the students possibility for individual students’ work at the University departments.






The information-search system of the catalogues and files help the readers find the important information in "the sea of books". The unique subject catalogue includes the information about periodical editions and collections that have been published since 1957.

Highly qualified specialists work at the library; they try to serve the readers properly.
