The main goal of
the Ternopil
State Medical
University named after I.
Ya. Horbachevskyy is to
overcome the stereotypes that medical nurse is only doctor’s assistant. The
level of the national nursing should be raised according to the contemporary
world standards.
A separate unit of
TSMU, which combines medical and practical training of nurses is the Institute of Nursing.

The Institute of Nursing is established
by resolution of the Academic Council of Ternopil
State Medical University named after I. Ya.
Horbachevskyy from September 27, 2005 ¹
2, and the order of the Rector of the University from
October 4, 2005 ¹ 08.01-22/2359 with the beginning of functioning on
October 10, 2005. The base of the Institute includes the TSMU
units and hospital departments of Ternopil.
PHd Yastremska S. O. is the director of the Institute of Nursing
from 2007. PHd Usynska O.S.
is vice-director of the Institute of Nursing and director of Distant Education
Center.
In fact, with
the introduction of bachelor degree in 1995, we began to
prepare nurses-managers, which can and should work as
independent professionals and cooperate with a doctor, not just to
help him.
The Institute of Nursing prepares nurses according
to the first level of accreditation; nurses-bachelors and laboratorians-bachelors
according to the second level of accreditation and nurses with master’s degree
according to the fourth level of accreditation among national and international
citizens. The educational process is carried out in full-time and distant
forms.
As part of the Institute of Nursing is the department of Clinical
Immunology, allergology and general patient care
under the directopn of MD Professor Gospodarskyy I. Ya.

The Institute of
nursing includes the computer lab (42 computers), library with reading hall, 2
lecture rooms (big (150 seats) and small (40 seats)), equipped with stationary
projection equipment, practical skills lab and offices of administration,
teachers and technical staff.
The

library is the research, scientific, information and
cultural-educational unit of the university.

The educational base of
the Institute includes the TSMU units and hospital departments of Ternopil.
Laboratories and their
equipment are up to their modern requirements. They equipped with modern
furniture, technical equipment according to the necessary requirements.
Material and
technical base of the Institute is
fully updated and equipped with modern phantoms. The Computer
lab is probably the best in the university. The
excellent library of textbooks in nursing of
American and Canadian editions is a great source of preparation
for classes for students and teachers.

Long before the
reorganization TSMU carried out an active international cooperation with
universities of the USA, Canada and Europe
connected with nursing education. During the first year the new structural
units were formed in the Institute
of Nursing. There are
American and International
Nursing Schools.
For the first time in Ukraine
a new experimental educational project was started in TSMU according to the
order of Ministry of Health and Education of Ukraine. This project realizes the
preparation of nurses from foreign students according to the special
educational programs based on the best American Nursing curriculums.
There were only 10
students in 2006, but this numbers increased till 2012 in 30 times.

includes 286 students. (full-time and distant form of education).
Learning the nursing manipulations
by foreign students
The result of
successful work of creating educational standards became the introduction of
educational degree – Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing (8.12010006
“Nursing”) educational direction 1001 “Medicine”. Accordingly, for the first
time in Ukraine the new
program was adopted by the Institute
of Nursing of TSMU in
July 2008. The license was received and preparation of nurses of master’s
degree was began. This innovation provided the opportunity for students to
improve their career level and get the Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing.
The main component
of the degree education in medicine is providing of the continual education.
This requires a lot of serious methodological changes in the educational
process. The distant form of education is perfect for those who have no time or
possibility to be present at the full-time educational process. This form will
reveal the priorities of nursing in health care reform in Ukraine.
Having studied the
international experience of distant learning on a detailed example of Mary Black Nursing School
(North Caroline, USA) and
with the support of Ministry of Health of Ukraine, TSMU named after I. Ya. Horbachevskyy introduced the
distant form of education for nurses-bachelors in 2008-2009 a.y.
Almost
every year our Institute of Nursing initiates
the powerful international conferences
on nursing.
The practical seminar about palliative
and hospice care in Ukraine. The presidium consists of the rector of TSMU
Kovalchuk L. Ya., the chairman of the Ukrainian League to promote palliative
and hospice care Knyazevych V. M., the representatives of health security
system of Ternopil and UkraineStudents and young researchers of Institute of
Nursing take part actively in the international conferences, seminars and
symposiums. To the scientific work are involved both Ukrainian and foreign
students.

Some of the
academic stuff of the Institute of Nursing were in the Nursing
School named after Mary Black, which
is the subdivision of University of South Caroline Upstate to discover nursing system of
education in USA.
Especially: peculiarities of students’ clinical work and starting the
cooperation between this school and our university.
Also some of the academic stuff of the Institute of Nursing
took part in MATRA project in 2006 to receive the grant. The aim is to improve
the medical help to elderly people in Ukraine. The program is sponsored
by Netherlands’
government.
Students and young
researchers of Institute
of Nursing take part actively
in the international conferences, seminars and symposiums. To the scientific work are
involved both Ukrainian and foreign students.
Student of the Institute of Nursing Olesya Demborynska has occupied
the first place among nurses of Ternopil region in
the competition “The best by profession”
In the future plans
of the Institute
of Nursing are
improvement of work on the current programs to be not only the first, but also
the best educational institution of nursing education.
