The department of Medical Biology was organized in 1957. In 1957-1974 the chair was headed by Ass. professor I.I. Yaremenko, in 1974-1995 – by M.D., Prof. A.I.Lokay. In 1995-1998 – by PhD, Ass. professor B.R.Boychuk. In 1998-2000 The department of Medical Biology was a part of the department of Medical Biology, Microbiology, Virology, and Immunology. In 2000-2001 the department of Pharmacognosy with Biology and Medical Genetics. The head of department was PhD, Ass. professor S.M.Marchyshyn. In 2002 the department was headed by M.D., Prof. M.M.Korda. In 2002-2003 the department was headed by Prof. N.A.Kulikova. In 2003 the department was given a new name “The department of Medical Biology. The head of department was PhD, Prof. L.T.Kotlyarenko. In 2005 there was the unification of the department of Microbiology, Virology, and Immunology and the department of Medical Biology. In 2011, May the department of Medical Biology became separate. The head of department was PhD, Prof. L.T.Kotlyarenko. In 2012, February MD, Prof. L.Ya. Fedonyuk led the Department of Medical Biology.

Teaching process at the department

The 1st year students of the three Faculties including Medical, Pharmaceutical and Dentistry study at the department.The students of the listed above Faculties, as well as the students of the Educational-Scientific Institute of Nursing, are taught the Medical Biology. The texts of methodical instructions for practical lessons and students’ self-training materials are regularly renovated. Educational films “Evolution”, “Medical Helmintology”, “Medical Arachnoenthomology” and other have been created. The textbooks for Higher Medical Educational Establishments “Medical Biology” have been published. Methodical instructions for practical classes have been regularly renovated, improved and published.

Scientific interests of the teaching staff

· Studying the problem of mitochondrial and chromosomal diseases.

· Studying the structure of small intestine under aluminum and cadmium intoxication.

· Studying the Alcohol-Induced Acute Hepatotoxicity in the Liver

· Investigation of biologically active substances in in vitro cultures of plants of Hypericum L. and Carlina L. families.
