From 1957 to 1959 PhD Antonova M.V. was the Head of the Department. From 1959 to 1975 the department was headed by MD, Professor O.V. Perov. From 1975 to 1976 ssoc. G. I. Kmit was the Head of the Department. From 1976 to 1995 MD, Professor. V.M. Serheta was the Head of the Department, from 1995 to 1998 - MD, Professor V.A. Kondratyuk, from 1998 to 2002 the Department was headed by MD, Professor B. R. Boychuk, from 2002 to 2004 - MD, Professor V.A. Kondratyuk. Today MD, Professor M.O. Kashuba is the Head of the Department.

The history of department

General hygiene department was organized in July 1957.  Eugene Gnatovych Goncharuk (1930-2004) was the first teacher of general hygiene department, later - Academician, Academy of Pedagogical Sciences and Medical Sciences of Ukraine and more than 10 academies in other countries for 20 years rector of National Medical University in Kyiv.

PhD. Maria Antonova was the first head of general hygiene department since 1957 till 1959 years.

From 1959 to 1975, the department was headed by MD, professor. O.V.Perov.

From 1975-1976 the department was managed by Ass. Prof. H.I.Kmit

MD, professor. V.M.Serheta was the head of department from the 1976 to 1995 years.

MD, professor. V.A.Kondratyuk was the head of department from 1995 to 1998 - and from 2002 to 2004 years.

From 1998 to 2002, the department was headed by MD, professor. B.R.Boychuk

From 2004 general hygiene and ecology department has been heading by MD., prof. M.O. Kashuba

Educational work of Department

The staff of the Department is constantly working on the improvement of educational and metodical work. Recently the discipline has been taught in III and VI courses of Medical Faculty, II course of Dental Faculty, I and III courses Faculty of Pharmacy, as well as II, IV, V courses of training and research institute of nursing. According to the curriculum basic hygiene and environmental sections are taught. This main preventive discipline unites all problems of hygienical science and sanitary practices. The impact of the factors of environment on human health in labor activities, training, education and accommodation are also taught at the department. During the last 5 years 2 textbooks, 1 manual have been published.

A database for the outcome of independent testing of medical students of Medical and Dental Faculties in three languages was created and introduced in the controlling program.

A database of test tasks for everyday knowledge control under the 'Moodle' system was created and included in a special program for students of VI and III courses of Medical Faculties, II course of Dental Faculty and III course of Faculty of Pharmacy.

The methodical instructions to practical classes for students of III course of Medical Faculty was published according to the credit-module system in English and Ukrainian.

Practical exercises and lectures have all necessary educational and teaching materials: methodical instructions, lectures. Textbooks, manuals, and laser training CD was prepared by the staff of the Department for the students’ use.

Research interests of Department staff

For many years the Department has been dealing with the question of hygienicaly permissible concentrations of chemical substances and their combination in water environment. Also the staff has been working on toxicological, medico-biological, sanitary-hygienicaly researches of chemical substances and materials. Furthermore, the Department studies the conditions of training and education of students in schools, the impact of studying process on the health of children and teenagers and their further professional activity. Starting from 1998 the Department has been studying toxicology, pathogenesis, differential diagnosis and effective methods of treatment of Amanita-Falloides mushroom poisoning, and normalization of chemical composition of drinking water.

The main scientific achievements of the Department

The Staff of the Department has worked out:

• The hygienical basises of optimization of the environment in pre-school children's institutions, schools, specialized schools;
• The standards for the evaluation of the psychophysiological development of pre-school age children in the Western region of Ukraine (3-7 years);
• The hygienical recommendations on norms of chemical composition of regenerated water for aircrew;
• 25 hygienical norms (MAC) of harmful chemical substances in regenerate drinking water and water in reservoirs of domestic and drinking use were grounded and approved by the Ministry of Health;
• the role of lipid peroxidation, antioxidant system and energy exchange mechanisms in acute amanita- falloides poisoning;
• The computer expert system of diagnosis and differential diagnosis of acute amanita mushrooms poisoning.

Over the last 5 years, scholars of the department published 2 textbooks, 1 manual, published more than 85 scientific works in scientific magazines, 1 doctoral and 2 associate dissertation, received 6 patents, 1 newsletter invention.
