Studying work of department

Since January 2004, the department occupies the ground floor of the Institute of Morphology. Presently, 4 class rooms are equipped with modern equipments for specimens research. The working place of each teacher has visual system (microscope, camera, screen and computer) which allows to show and explain the histological specimens to students.

Individual work of students at practical lesson.

Staff of departments continuously work at monitoring the methodical study of students.

Students of 4 various faculties study at the histology department: - medical (1-2 years), dentistry (1 year), nurses (4 year), and pharmaceutic (1 year). Here they gain knowledge in cytology, embryology, general and special histology.

Practical lessons are organized due to methodical instructions. The mode of lesson is oriented based on acquiring knowledge and practical skills which are necessary for medical practice

Students have all the necessary methodical literature, which is continuously renewed and mastered. Teachers of department prepared manual-atlases “Ultrastructure of cells and tissues”, “Ultrastructure of main organs components and organism systems”, text-book “Embryology”, disk “Studying materials in histology, cytology and embryology”, studying films for practical skills mastering.

Studying materials which are created at department.

During last 5 years, studying process at histology deparment was modified due to the “Conception of development of Ternopil State Medical University named after I. Gorbachevsky ”. New Syllabi were made on the bases of typical programmes and realized accordingly to methodic of unite working days in Ukrainian, English and Russian languages. Special attention is devoted to practically oriented study due to Z-system.

All the necessary studying materials are placed at WEB-page for different faculties in different languages.

Special tests (250 for each lesson) are made for Moodle (students pre-tests before lessons) and for semester independent test exams.

There are special daily controlling programs for students which include: tests, questions for description, real-life situations, electron micrographs and specimens. Total mark for lesson includes: marks for practical part of lesson, theoretical discussion and control tests.

Special films in different chapters of discipline are created for practical skills aqiurement.

Library of institute of morphology with 23 computers allows the use of Internet and Intranet in studying process.

Scientific interests of the department staff

During a lot of years, scientists of department were interested in peculiarities of process of regeneration in different organs after thermal damage of skin. Lipid peroxidation and endotoxins are one of the most dangerous substances causing prominent general negative influence on human organism. Numerous microscopic and  submicroscopic researches showed significant changes of plasmalemmal and intracellular membranes under such circumstances. The use of antioxidants and enterosorbents corrects  the development of “burn disease” and stimulates adaptative and compensatory processes thus, promotes regenerative processes in burned organisms.

Now, studying of burn disease pathogenesis and biologic active matters influence on regenerative processes in inner organs and tissues and research of skin auto- and xenographts viability under different influences is the main scientific interest of histology department.

Longterm collaboration with combustiology department of hospital allowed to elaborate  methods of burned patients treatment which are based on the results of experimental research.

Now scientific  research work of department is made at laboratory of institute of morphology. There are laboratories here: Laboratory of electron microscopy, Morphometry, Chistochemistry and Spectrophotometry.

Scientific laboratory is equiped with modern techniques. The use of microscopes and digital cameras allow to perform quantitive and qualitative morphometric analysis of tissues and organs changes in different conditions.

Two modernized electron microscopes are active at histology department.

In December 2011, new  laboratory microscope with special programs for histological research was adopted.

Scientific laboratory of department.

In histological research, both general and special methods are used: hematoxylin and eosin stainment, toluidin blue according to Nissle’s method, iron hematoxylin, Van-Dengain method, silver impregnation and different histochemical methods. Now modern methods of immunochistochemistry are improved of which are: Identification of T- and B-lymphocytes (CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, CD68 and CD45), macrophages, apoptosis and mitotic divisions.

Macrometry, Massmetry and Morphometry are usually used and electronmicroscopy and electronmorphometry too.

Ultramicrotome is used for specimens preparation for electronmicroscopy (senior instructor Z.M. Nebesna)

Main scientific achievements of the department

The planned interdepartmental research "Changes in xenodermografts under exposure of physical factors and the effectiveness of their using on patients with burn injury" (clinical and morphological study) was completed in 2008.
Toxic, sorption and antimicrobial action of lyophilized xenografts after influence  of physical factors (singlet oxygen and biohalvanization) was studied. Clinically and morphologically were proved the effectiveness and feasibility of using of this grafts in complex treatment of the burnt patients. The department also took part in the implementation of the planned research "Clinical and morphological changes of body systems during diabetes and tyreopathy due to age aspect" (2006 - 2009 years). Within this research ultrasonic and biochemical indices of thyroid gland in young people with diabetes type II were studied. The defined relationships of antropo-somatometric indexes of ultrasonic volumes and levels of thyroid hormones in healthy patients and patients with diabetes type II in boys and girls of  different somatotypes were identified. Discriminant model features of type II diabetes ways of developement in young people were made, it depends on the characteristics of the structure of the body.

The planned interdepartmental research Using of factors of bioorganic and physical nature for the correction of regenerative processes in  thermal injury” was completed  in 2011. There were investigation of physical and biological properties of crushed substrate krioliofilized xenodermograft (of pig), its influence on the regenerative processes in the skin and organs of the body systems after thermal injury.

One of the priorities of the department is the organization of research and implementation of their results in the clinical practice.  Complex morphological and clinical studies have substantiated the feasibility of the new methods of burn disease treatment.  Informative method of  burned patient intoxication process  control by a modified method of acid hemolytic reaction allows objectively evaluate  the dynamic of endotoxemia and may be recommended for using in daily practice of clinical laboratories. The high biological activity of silicon wafers of "Combustiologist" enterprise gives reason to use them for scar prevention  in the place of epithelialized burn wounds and for treatment of fresh hypertrophic and keloid scars. The using of lyophilized grafts and crushed substrate is a promising method of correction both thermal and mechanical defects of the skin.

During the previous years, Theses for master’s degree were written as a result of scientific researchs: assist. L.D. Tupol (2007), assist. S.I. Jaworska (2008), assist. Z.M.  Nebesna and assist. Shuturma O. Ya. (2009), doctor Hrebenyk I.M. (2010), doctor Herasymchuk N.L. (2011).

44 articles, 58 abstracts, and 48 reports at various scientific forum were made by the collaboration of Institutes, as a result of the research by the staffs of the instutite since the last 5 years.

The department’s staff annually takes part in organizing and conducting of conferences. Next conferences were organized over the last 5 years: "The experience and problems of the modern methods of morphological studies of organs and tissues in the norm and in the diagnosis of pathological processes" (2007), "Applied aspects of the morphology of the experimental and clinical studies" (2008), "The morphological conditions of tissues and organ systems of the body in the norm and pathology"(2009), "Actual morphology problems " (2010) was devoted to 70th anniversary of Honored Scientist of Ukraine, professor Fedonyuk Ya.I., "Morphological aspects of microcirculation in the norm and pathology "(2011).

Students researches at the department are organized according to the plans and existing programs of the University: "Student as a future high qualificated specialist" and "Student science and vocational education". Students regularly take parts in various scientific forums. In the second round of the Ukrainian competition of scientific researches in  "Theoretical medicine"   3rd year student of medical faculty Kohan R. took prizes for 3rd place  in 2009,   2nd year student of medical faculty Pokhyla H.for the 2nd place in 2010.

Upbringing work

Tutors of histology department are actively working with ukrainian and foreign students of their groups. They organize excursions, discussions, attend theater and concerts. Every year they visit museum political prisoners and make a respect to victims of 1932-1933 hunger.
