Department’s History

The department of medical rehabilitation and sports medicine was founded in September 2001. Department’s basis constituted the course of therapeutic physical training and sports medicine; since 2008 physical and medical rehabilitation as well as physiotherapy, physical training courses were included. The purpose for department’s establishing was teaching optimization of such disciplines as physical, medical and social rehabilitation, sports medicine, physiotherapy, balneology, reflexotherapy, therapeutic physical training in surgery, therapy, pediatrics and dentistry. The rising of these disciplines teaching quality level to dentistry, medicine and nursing school students as well as to internees, postgraduates is one of the department’s main jobs. To date the chair consists of 18 members: 2 full professors, 4 assistants of  professors, 8 assistants and 1 senior teacher and 3 laboratory assistent. Ihor Mysula has been the department’s head since its foundation moment till now. At the same time he is the first pro-rector and pro-rector on education work at TSMU by I. Gorbachevsky. Holding position of a department’s professor A. Golyachenko fulfils his duties. Department’s seven lecturers have medical degree and are the first and top category doctors. All lecturers have large teaching experience. Assistant of professor T. Bakaliuk is the department’s manageress.

Nine department  lecturers got their higher education training in “Medicine”, four in “Physical education and sports”. 

The department of medical rehabilitation and sports medicine is a part of Medical faculty, therefore, considerable part of its educational work deals with teaching correspondent disciplines to the above mentioned categories of students. Department’s body permanently works on methodical activity improvement. Majority of lecturers are English speaking. Disciplines are taught in accordance with Ukraine Ministry of Health programs, correspondingly, methodical and material basis were created. Department’s educational bases are the reducing treatment department for Ternopil regional clinical and psychoneurological hospitals, sanatorium “Medobory” and a sports building of TSMU.

Department’s teaching staff provides the high level of instruction, scientific research, acquiring practical skills in patients’ medical, physical and social rehabilitation as well as many aspects of a public health organization. Since majority of department’s lecturers can speak several languages, it enables them to employ all world’s educational novelties and achievements in educational process. Department’s staff passed probation period at Medical Institutions in USA and Western Europe and were issued corresponding documents.

Department’s teaching staff organizes on a regular basis, since the moment of its formation, all-Ukrainian scientific conferences on different aspects of rehabilitation and reducing treatment.

A doctor of medical sciences and three candidates have been trained by the Department. Presently one lecturer is realizing Ph.D. thesis, two are the applicants.

The fourth and the sixth year students of medical faculty, nursing school, internes, physiotherapists study at the department and do pre-attestation practical work.  Students study different physiotherapeutic methods of treating disease, which are used during sanatoria and health resorts rehabilitation stage.  The basics of medical rehabilitation in therapy, orthopedics and traumatology, pediatrics, neurology, surgery, gynaecology, dermato-venerology, otolaryngology, family medicine are taught to internees.  Special attention is paid to the use of natural and preformed physical factors, physiotherapy exercises, massage technique, methods of manual and kinesiotherapy. Practical trainings are held at Ternopil clinics and hospitals, sports building and medical and diagnostic building of a sanatorium “Medobory”, where students and internees master methods of physiotherapeutic treatment and rehabilitation as well as untraditional treatment methods. Manuals and school books on medical rehabilitation, physiotherapy and balneology were published by department’s staff.  

The field of scientific interest

The main scientific trend of a department’s functioning are related to  “Studying the influence of a pelotherapy and low intense physical factors with osteochondrosis patients combined with osteporosis ” state registration number  0110U001935. Moreover, the evaluation of a physical state and factors of ischemia development as well as the influences of different kinds of reflexotherapy are investigated. Department’s scientific elaborations are directed on studying of treatment medical effect against a background of a local medical factors and new methods of rehabilitation.

The department’s main scientific achievements

· The bone tissue density with deforming osteoarthritis during hydrosulfuric baths treatment has been investigated.

·  The influence of mechanism of  singlet-oxygen therapy at bronchial asthma has been studied.

The state of immune system of deforming osteoarthritis patients under sanatoria and health resorts condititions have been investigated.

·  The use effectiveness  of the microwave resonant therapy at  joints pathology has been proved.

Department’s medical work

Department  clinicians’ medical and tutorial activity is conducted in the following concepts:

            Sports medicine:

· Medical control, including consultations, initial and stream examinations of sportsmen.

· Medical and pedagogical attendance when doing physical exercises.

· Consultations and permanent health state medical control at special medical and therapeutic physical training groups.

· The first and second year students’ participation in profound medical examination. Medical rehabilitation:

· Supervision and consultation of patients with various diagnosis on the basis of Ternopil regional psycho-neurological hospital, sanatorium “Medobory”, Ternopil university hospital, giving recommendations as for medical, including physical rehabilitation and illness precautions coupled with treatment and prophylactics’ effectiveness control.  

Sanatorium “Medobory”

Brought into operation in 1988. Consists of two departments: medical and diagnostics and therapeutic. Laboratory, functional diagnostics studies, baneological department with sodium chlorine, hydrogen sulphide baths, peat and mud dept., dry carbonic baths, sodium chlorine well-room, etc. The department also includes stomatological and denture; apitherapy, speleotherapy, aromatherapy rooms and phototreatment.

Put into practice of healthcare:

 1. Blue clay use in complex arthrosis of joints treatment coupled with ischemia at sanatoria and health resorts stage.

2. Implementation of a low-frequency magnetotherapy in complex arthrosis of joints treatment coupled with arterial hypertensionз at sanatoria and health resorts stage.

3. Magneto-laser therapy implementation in a complex arthrosis of joints treatment coupled with arterial hypertensions.

At the active participation of chair’s  staff interrupted couses for regional physiotherapists and rehabilitologists are given. Eight new medical treatment methods are put into practice at  sanatoria and health resorts  institutions by the department’s staff.

At TSMU by I.Horbachevskyy functions medical and sanitary centre «Chervona kalyna”, with open air swimming pool, volleyball playground, tennis court, table tennis room, ski lodge, all of which are well-equipped. At a hostel, 1  Zyvova str., operates the sports centre, equipped with up-to-date training apparatus, tennis tables, boxing punchbags, sports inventory. Here, under the sports instructors and paramedics, students can improve their physical conditions and strengthen health in a free time. There is also a sports complex on 3, Kotsiubynsky str., situated in a public area close by the central stadium. There are four gyms: playing hall, gymnastics hall, wrestling hall. Playing hall is made to play volleyball, basketball, futhall, tennis, track and field. The up-to-date score-board can be employed.

Wrestling hall equipped with gymnastics floor mats, punchbags, climbing ropes, aerobics inventory.

Gymnastics hall is for gymnastics classes, rhythmic and table tennis. There is modern training equipment, wall bars for about 30 training exercises, 2 exercise bicycles, 2 treadmills etc. Methodical guidance on students’ independent work on sports and people with a poor health has been worked out.

Here one can get qualified consultation and assistance concerning physical development, posture correction and disease prevention.  Nine sports sections operate on the basis, under supervision of experienced coaches: futhall (men), volleyball (women, men), basketball (women, men), aerobics (women), track and field, kickboxing (women, men), chess (women, men), table tennis (women, men), lawn tennis. All university teams provided with a uniform.   

Department’s scientific work

The students from three faculties are engaged in physical training: medicine (I-V year students), bachelors and senior specialists of medicine, faculty of pharmacy students. Theoretical and practical knowledge on physiotherapy and sports medicine medical faculty students get during the fourth and second year of their studies. The textbook “Physical education at secondary health care facilities” has been published, the student’s passport of health has been prepared.

The sphere of scientific interests of a department’s staff.

Studying the impact of different by nature and volume physical loadings on students’ functional state, motive activity and cordial work. Studying changes in cardio-vascular system of SMG students, during preferable development of separate physical qualities.  

Main scientific achievements of a department

· The mechanisms of changes in students’ cardio-vascular system at different loadings have been studied.

· Sets of physical exercises and training programs at cardio-vascular diseases have been worked out and proposed.

· The efficiency of exercising for students’ functional state, mental and physical capacity improvement is shown.

· New methods of students  basic motor qualities development have been suggested.

· The chair’s scientists published 72 works for the last 5years, 2  Ph.D thesis have been defended.

Department’s achievements in a mass sports work

8 champions of Ukraine, about 100 champions of sports days of medical colleges, 25 sports masters, more than 1200 first-grade sportsmen, 15 thousand mass grade sportsmen have been prepared.
