Shkrobot Svitlana Ivanivna is an author and coauthor of the 270 scientific and study-methodological works, 4 patents for invention, 14 diplomas for rationalization proposals, the author of 2 textbooks, 3 monographers and 2 methodological recommendations approved by Ukrainian MPH, 3 informational letters, and new methods of treatment in practical medicine.

The Neurology Department was found at the 1st of October in 1958 on base of Neurology section in Ternopil regional clinical hospital. From the moment of founding till 1969 year the head of the Department was professor Alexander Yarosh, from 1969 till 1998 – professor Mykhaylo Ischenko, and from June 1998 year – d.m.n., prof. Svitlana Ivanivna Shkrobot.
Educational work of the Department
Theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Department of Neurology, Psychiatry, Narcology and Medical Psychology receive students of five faculties: medical, dentistry, pharmaceutical, foreign students, postgraduate education (interns and doctors) and SSI of Nursing. Students of medical faculty are trained: Ist year – subject “The basis of psychology. The basis of pedagogy”; IVth year – subjects: “Neurology”, “Medical psychology”, “Psychiatry”; dentistry faculty - Ist year – subjects: “The basis of psychology. The basis of pedagogy”; IIIrd year – subject “Medical psychology”, IVth year – subjects: “Neurological diseases, including neurostomatology”, “Psychiatry”; faculty of foreign students, postgraduate education (interns and doctors of Specialty “General practice – family medicine”, “Emergency medicine”, “Neurology”, “Internal medicine”, “Orthopedic and traumatology”, “Pharmaceutics”, “Clinical pharmaceutics”), SSI of Nursing (including distance study form of subject “Psychology of communication”).
The studying in the Department is held according to the credit-module system within the bounds of system “The sole day”.
The teachers of Department work above the improvement of Methodical instructions for students for practical lessons, topics of lectures and practical lessons. All lectures are associated with multimedia presentations. “Neurology” subject includes presentations for practical classes with schemes, diagrams, pictures, video and photos according to the topic of practical lesson.
Test control of students’ knowledge according to the “Moodle” system was introduced. The basis of test tasks for complex semester exam was created. The protocols of neurological and psychiatric patient’s examination for the IVth year students of medical and dentistry faculty are used for optimization of studying process and control of practical part of students’ work. The Department is provided by English-speaking teachers. Certificates for teaching foreign students in English have the teachers: Prof. Shkrobot S.I., dots. Hara I.I., dots. Sokhor N.R., dots. Budarna O.Y., as. Milevska-Vovchuk L.S., as. Mysula M.S., as. Smashna O.Y., as. Snovyda L.T., as. Mysula Y.I.. The control of practical skills according to OSCE system is introduced.
The teachers of Department prepared “Methodical instructions for students of medical college for practical lessons of neurology”, “Methodical instructions for students of medical faculty for individual work in neurology”, “Methodological instructions for students and interns “Medical card” and “Pharmacotherapy at emergency states in Neurology”. There are video-films for matriculate skills “Methodic of examination of patient with acute cerebral vascular disturbance”, “Methodic of examination of patient with radiculopathy”, “Methodic of examination of patient with paranoid schizophrenia”, “Methodic of examination of personality disorders in patient with epilepsy” on the Web-page. Several textbooks are published – for the students of foreign faculty «Neurology in lectures»; for the students of SSI of Nursing “ Nursing in neurology”, chapter in textbook “Family medicine”. Compact disk was created and introduced into practice “Vascular diseases of brain and spinal cord”.
While studying theoretical and practical topics interns and students are oriented to the deep search by means of computer based methods such as Internet. Every chapter of studying program in Psychiatry, Narcology and medical Psychology is associated with clinical tasks and tests, that are widely used in course of individual work and practical classes. For the practical work with patients Department uses special atlas for main pathopsychological investigations. Studying process includes video films. There is a list of films that have special studying value, demonstrates types of psychiatric pathology rarely observed in practice and in clinical conditions. These films help to create studying video materials. The teachers of Department record an audiocassette with sick psychiatric patients’ discussion. There are different things made by psychiatric patients, pictures, poems and diary of them.
Neurologists have twice a year possibility to participate in pre attestation cycles. Since 2011 two cycles of thematic improvement are introduced. They are “Vascular pathology of brain and spinal cord”, “Peripheral nervous system diseases”.
The sphere of scientific interests in Department
· Studying of cerebral vascular pathology of the brain (clinical-paraclinical characteristics and pathogenetic validity of treatment optimization of patients with acute and chronic vascular cerebral disorders).
· Improvement of diagnostics and treatment of neurological syndromes of lumbar ostheochondrosis with usage of methods of physical rehabilitation
· Investigation of clinical peculiarities of multiple sclerosis, introduction of modern methods of treatment including immune modulating and immune suppressing therapy.
· Studying of changes of bone mineral density in patients with Neurological pathologies: studying of relationships between degree of bone deficiency and state of functioning of systems and organs, creating of adequate preventive-treating measures.
· Peculiarities of clinical picture of paranoid schizophrenia associated with somatic disorders.
· Comparative description of the dynamics of clinical symptoms of cognitive disorders in patients with paranoid schizophrenia.
· Gender-specific suicidal behavior in patients with depressive disorders
· Rehabilitation program for the adaptation of patients to mental disorders
· Primary psychotic episode-stages of treatment, prevention
· The study of disease and disability access to patients for mental disorders, depending on the receiving conventional therapy and new generation antipsychotics.
Basic achievements of department
· Was investigated processes of de- and regeneration of nervous trunks
· Was elaborated rational pathogenetic methods of treatment of Neurological signs of lumbar and cervical osteochondrosis, multiple sclerosis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis
· Were studied central and cerebral haemodynamic peculiarities, rheological blood properties, electrolyte balance and another metabolic changes and their role in cerebral blood circulation disorders developments.
· Was elaborated and used in practical medicine activity “Haemodynamic control and treatment ischemic disorders of cerebral blood circulation in case of atherosclerotic stenosis of main cerebral arteries of the head and neck.
· The state of bone tissue and relationships between degree of bone deficiency and state of functioning of systems and organs was studied in patients with multiple sclerosis, dyscirculative encephalopathy after small doses of radiation, in patients with neurological signs of lumbar osteochondrosis, after brain infarction of hemispheres.
· Were investigated clinical and pathogenetic features vertebrogenic lumbar pain syndromes in younger, middle-aged and elderly patients.
· Were studied clinical and immunological features in patients younger and middle age in the acute period of ischemic stroke.
During the last 5 years the members of Department:
· published over the 160 scientific works, 2 candidates of medical science were defended (Milevska-Vovchuk L.S., 2010; Al Hashym Ahmed, 2011), 5 candidate thesis are still being worked out (Mysula M.S., Mysula Y.I., Snovyda L.T., Smashna O.Y., Sagaydak L.O.). There were received 3 patents for invention, 16 rationalization proposals, 2 methodical recommendations proved by Ukrainian MPH, 3 informational letters, 20 new methods of diagnosis and treatment were introduced.
· 8 master’s degree were received in our Department during the last 5 years: Mysula M. (2009), Mysula Y. (2009), Lyuta O. (2009), Sagaydak L. (2009), Pyrig O. (2009), Vardynets M. (2009), Dyachan O. (2008), Saliy M. (2011). All the mentioned persons have defended Master thesis and received diplomas with honors.
· Master degree in Nursing in psychiatry received Zubkovych L., Batyukh O. (2010).
· Clinical ordinators during the last 5 years were Bober H. (2005), Lenyo L. (2006), Hukovskyy O. (2009), Al Hashym Ahmed (2009), Logoyda O. (2010), Yuryk A. (2011). Now there are 5 clinical ordinators in our Department (Shpylyk I., Salyy M., Sagaydak L., Tytan O., Palasyuk O.) 2 Master (Gorbova MR, Nasalik R.B.).
· Members of the Department take part in international conferences, congresses of modern topics in neurology and psychiatry.
· Department organized scientific – practical conference “Modern problems in neurology and psychiatry” devoted to 50th anniversary of Ternopil regional psychoneurological hospital and Department of neurology, psychiatry, narcology and medical psychology; regional conference “Vertigo in neurological practice”. "Integrative approaches to diagnosis and treatment of mental and psychosomatic disorders," "Prospects of development of services for children with autism spectrum disorders and hyperactivity disorder", "Bipolar disorder: from guidelines to actual clinical practice"
Practical medical activity
The Department is situated in Ternopil regional clinical communal psychoneurological hospital – modern clinics with 835 beds, 17 clinical divisions (among them are 11 psychiatrical, 5 neurological and emergency unit, in policlinics and day stationary unit the doctors examine primary, diagnostically difficult and expert-patients. During the last 5 years diagnostic base of hospital was filled up with modern equipment – the only one in western region multidetector spiral computer tomography “Toshiba”, electroneuromyograph, ultrasound doplerograph, ultrasound device for duplex scanning of extra- and intracranial vessels of brain and extremities, digital X-ray. The hospital has modern emergency department, unit of somatoform disorders, diagnostic center, clinical and bacteriological lab, center of medical and social rehabilitation for people with organic lesion of nervous system, physiotherapeutical department with hydropathic establishment. Regional vascular center, regional center of neurophysiological and pathopsychological investigations, center for epileptic patients are founded.
The members of Department participate in treating-diagnostic and consulting process: professor rounds and docents’ rounds in divisions of hospital, examination of diagnostically difficult patients and expert-patients. They carry out routine consultations in hospitals of the city and region. They regularly participate in meetings of the Control and expert commissions TOKKPNL and Ternopil regional state administration of health care, conferences of specialists, clinical analysis, monthly clinical and pathologo-anatomical conferences. Department organizes meetings of regional association of neurologists, psychiatrists, courses for improvement of specialists of practical medicine.
In order to optimize treating work members of our Department introduce into practice experience of psychoneurological hospital named after Josef Babinski in Krakow and neuropsychiatrical clinics in Opole for re-socialization, rehabilitation and re adaptation of psychiatric patients.
There is program of narcotic abuse treatment “Krok”.
The department conducts courses of of thematic advanced training "Current issues of the vascular pathology of the brain", "Modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of diseases of peripheral nervous system", "Integrative approaches to diagnosis and treatment of mental and psychosomatic disorders," "Prospects of development of services for children with autism spectrum disorders and hyperactivity disorders", "Bipolar disorder: from methodical recommendations to actual clinical practice".
Staff department actively participate in all events eliminate the negative psychological effects of emergency situations, and is a member of "The behavior of people in extreme conditions and emergency situations in peacetime."
