Department of pharmacognosy with medical botany was established on July the 1-st, 2003. The first head of the department was biological sciences doctor professor Fira L.S. From 2009 the department is headed by pharm.s.d. professor S.M Marchyshyn. The staff of the department are professor Marchyshyn S.M, assoc.prof. Shanayda M.I, assoc.prof. Hrymalyuk Î.I., assoc.prof. Kernychna I.Z., sen. teacher. Demydyak A.L, ass. Berdej T.S, ass. Dahym I.S, Lykanuk M.I., sen.lab.ass. Koziar M.I, sen. lab.ass. Potishnuy I.M. The department provides teaching of pharmaceutical botany, pharmacognosy with basic biochemistry of plants, from 2004 – resources of medicinal plants, and special course medicinal plants and herbal medicine.

The department constantly works on improvement of teaching methods; giving theoretical and practical knowledge to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th year students of the pharmaceutical faculty. Students of 1 and 2nd years studying pharmaceutical botany, 3rd year students - pharmacognosy, 5th year students - resources of medicinal plants and special course “Medicinal plants and herbal medicine”. Collaborators of the department prepared and published manual on educative field practice in medical botany, published methodical instructions “Plant Anatomy”, “Plant Morfology”, “Taxonomy of medicinal plants”, “Pharmacognosy”, register the training-field practice on medical botany, monographs “Medicinal plants of Ternopil’ region”, “Arnica treats”. For foreign students on medical botany and pharmacognosy, created working programs and methodical instructions in Ukrainian, English and Russian. Lections from all mentioned disciplines are leaded with the usage of multimedia projector.

Pharmacognosic studing of some species of medicinal plants: Viburnum opulus, Erytrigia repens, Tropaeolum majus, Lophantus anisatus L.,Hyssopus officinalis L., Dracocephalum moldavica L., Bellis perennis, Arnica montana and foliosa, Borago officinalis, Levisticum officinale, Veronica chamaedrys, genus Aster, species and genus Tilia and Potentilla.

Pharmacognosic research of various species of medicinal plants (macro-and microscopic analysis, phytochemical researches - determining the contents of biologically active substances and their pharmacological activity).
Collaborators of the department have defended 1 doctor dissertation, 4 candidate dissertations. It is planned to defend 9 candidate dissertations, 1 doctor dissertation.
From the time of department foundation the staff has published over 200 scientific works.
In 2005 and 2008, the department organized and conducted national scientific conference “Chemistry of natural compounds”, in work of which took part scientists from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Ternopil.
The department provides work of student scientific group under the leadership of assoc.prof. Shanayda M.I..
Main direction of researches of the science club members – botanical pharmacognosic study of medicinal plants, which grow in the botanical Garden of TSMU by I.Ya. Horbachevsky Red Kalyna and in wild state on the territory of Ternopil region. Students work on a variety of scientific subjects under the leadership of the department teachers - exercise in searching of the literature, make the necessary scientific researches, the results of which are annually published and reported at scientific conferences.
