Department “Ambulatory Care" was founded on January 5, 1999 by the order of the rector of Ternopil State Medical Academy named after I.Ya. Horbachevskyy. Organization of the first, within higher educational medical institutions of Ukraine, multidisciplinary department of Ambulatory Care and Family Medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University can justly be regarded as a significant contribution of the permanent head of the department, Professor V.B. Goshchynsky to the development of family medicine in our country. It has really become a department of ambulatory care - family medicine practice, where specialists of family medicine could be trained on the undergraduate level. In particular, the next courses are taught here: ambulatory-outpatient therapeutics, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics-gynaecology, and functional diagnostics. The basis for the department is Ternopil Municipal Polyclinic department No.2, Women's Consultation No.2, Municipal Paediatric Polyclinic department, the Municipal Ambulance Station.
Professor Volodymyr Goshchynsky, MD, PhD, Doctor of Med. Sci., is the head of the department. The other representatives of faculty staff are Professor Babinets L.S., MD, PhD., Doctor of Med. Sci., Professor Starodub E.M., MD, PhD., Doctor of Med. Sci., The educational process of the Department is managed by Associate Professor Borovik I.O., MD, PhD. Accountable for the scientific work is Associate Professor Botsyuk N.E., , MD, PhD., The clinical work of the Department is ruled by Associate Professor Korylchuk N.I. , MD, PhD. Among faculty team members there are also Associate Professors Yasniy O.R. Vorontsov A.A., Tvorko V.M., assistants Riabokon S.S., Mihenko B.A., Haliyash N.B. Faculty members of the department are not only highly qualified doctors and experienced teachers, but also talented scientists.

Educational Affairs
The Department actively participates in educational and methodical work of Ternopil State Medical University. Faculty members have created the original curriculum on ambulatory care and have developed the teaching facilities for this course. Among other achievements of the teaching process at the department, there are creation and issuance of the 'Methodical recommendations on disability and dispensary follow-up', CD "Polyclinic affairs", creation of a bank of tests to a number of disciplines. The faculty is particularly proud of the textbook "Ambulatory care - family medicine practice".

Scientific Interests
The research interests of the department are in the area of improvement of the short-term and long-term outcomes of the abdominal surgical operations. Particular interests are centred in the following fields:
(1) development of new types of surgical interventions on stomach and duodenum;
(2) development of new suture materials with antibacterial properties and ability to self-resorption;
(3) new methods of treatment for varicose veins and obliterative atherosclerosis;
(4) prevention and treatment of secondary osteoporosis after operations on organs of the gastrointestinal tract.

The main scientific achievements of the department
- Implementation into surgical practice new suture polymeric materials with antibacterial properties and ability to self-resorption: kaproyod, kapromed.
- Developed and implemented in practice the methods of sealing of veins using the adhesive composition CL-3.
- Created the concept of polynutrient insufficiency in chronic pancreatitis;
- Proposed and implemented into practice the methods of correction osteodeficiency in patients with chronic pancreatitis;
- Formulation of thesis on the lipid status in patients with chronic pancreatitis and suggested combined treatment statins;
- Condition of microflora of colon was studied in patients with chronic pancreatitis in combination with COPD and method of correction of dysbiosis with the inclusion of symbiotics was implemented;
- The influence of concomitant hypertension and endothelial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of trophical changes in patients with chronic pancreatitis and the role of metabolic therapy of such conditions were investigated;
- The role of cytokine status in spinal osteochondrosis with reflex syndromes was revealed and methodology pharmacological and acupunctured correction of pain was implemented.

Clinical Affairs
The main clinical base of the Department is at the Ternopil Municipal Polyclinic department No.2. Associate and Assistant Professors of the Department provide treatment and medical consultations within departments of the Polyclinics, as well as medical consulting of the patients in Ternopil Municipal Clinical Hospital No.2. Surgeons of the Department have their practice in the inpatient surgical department of Ternopil Municipal Clinical Hospital No.2 and in the center "One-Day Surgery ".
